PARTICIPANTS
The Ski to Sea Race is a relay race open to all persons 15 years or older. The relay consists of cross-country skiing, downhill skiing or snowboarding, running, biking, canoeing, mountain biking and sea kayaking. A team will consist of one person for each leg of the race, except for the canoe leg (2 paddlers per canoe). A person may compete on only one team, and in only one leg of the race. A team will be disqualified if one or more of the race legs are not completed. However, remaining race legs may be completed and times will be recorded. The Committee reserves the right to disqualify any team who does not abide by established race rules or whose equipment is deemed to be unsafe for the event in which the person is entered.  A team may also be disqualified if any team participant or affiliate displays unsportsmanlike conduct or brings illegal equipment into the exchange points.

RACE
The race will begin at 8:30 am at Mt. Baker Ski Area.  Racing bibs will be color coded by division. A wristband must be passed between teammates at each leg exchange of the race. A team will be disqualified if it does not finish the race with its team wristband. All participants must wear a bib designating the team number with the number clearly visible. For the safety of all participants, based on the judgment of the course monitors, if sufficient forward progress has not been made the racer will be disqualified and removed from the course. Any discrepancies will be addressed by the Race Committee. Decisions are final the day of the race.

TEAM RACE PACKETS
Team Race Packets MUST be picked up at the Chamber Office, 1201 Cornwall Avenue, Suite 100, in downtown Bellingham.
• Friday, May 23 from 10:00am—4:00pm or
• Saturday, May 24 from 12 noon to 6:00pm

RESULTS
It is important for all racers to show their bib numbers when crossing the exchange areas. Timing of individual legs may vary based upon exchange area layout. Therefore, personal time kept by racers may not correspond with official results.

CHIP TIMING FOR 2008

1. Each team will be assigned one timing chip that will be included in and picked up with their race packet. This chip is associated with your team bib number and cannot be switched with any other chip. The timing chip is attached to a Velcro strap.  This timing chip is to be treated as if it were a baton, by being passed from one team member to the next during the event. NO CHIP—NO TIME.

2. A Chip Timing test will be made during Race Packet pickup at the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce office (1201 Cornwall Ave., Suite 100; Phone 360-734-1330).

3. The team member participating in the Cross-Country Ski leg will wear the chip by wrapping the Velcro through the plastic loop and back on it so it forms a bracelet on the wrist. Each racer should secure the chip on their wrist in this same fashion to avoid losing it. Team Members are responsible for securing the chip in a manner suitable for their leg of the race.  If you flip in the river your chip should be ATTACHED to you and not sinking to the bottom because it was loose in the canoe.

4. Once a team member finishes their leg of the race, there will be a finish line and a chip timing trigger area clearly marked with orange cones.  As you cross the finish line of your leg you should have the chip in your hand ready to pass to your next TEAM MEMBER and make sure you pass the chip low enough (knee height) to the timing wire (timing wire is on the ground under the mat, running between the two orange cones) to record your chip.  It is your responsibility to make sure your chip is recorded and passed off to your Next Leg Team Member.  For information about how chips are handed off at each leg, see details of race legs.  Check you Racers Information Packet for up-to-date Chip Timing information.

5. The last team member must return the timing chip after they cross the finish line in Marine Park. There will be volunteers to collect the timing chip.  The timing chip is the responsibility of the team. Lost chips have a replacement value of $95 and will be charged to the credit card used for the team Registration to cover the replacement costs.

COMPETITION PROTEST PROCEDURE & RULES
Upon completion of his/her venue (leg) of the race, the racer has fifteen (15) minutes to notify the designated race official at the exchange area of his/her intent to protest and to request an official protest form. A protest may only be made by and against racers in the same venue (leg).
The official protest form will require information regarding the incident including witnesses for verification by the Ski to Sea Race Committee.  The protester will be required to fill out the official form and turn it in to the Ski to Sea Race Protest committee with a $20 fee at the finish area (Marine Park) within thirty (30) minutes after the completion of the race by their team.

A quorum of the Ski to Sea Race Committee will be responsible for the final decision regarding any protest, including any notification by race officials or race monitors who have documented violations of race participant and those not specified in the race guide.  Upon completion of the review, the $20.00 will be forfeited to the Ski to Sea Race if the protest is denied or refunded if it is upheld. The Protest Committee’s decision is final and unsportsmanlike conduct by any race team or their affiliates will disqualify that team from the race.

RACER CONDUCT
The Ski to Sea Race Committee would like to thank each racer for their participation in the 2008 Ski to Sea Race. Each year, you, the participants, have made the race an exciting and growing success. Although the race is produced by the Bellingham / Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry, it would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement officers that make the Ski to Sea experience happen. These volunteers go out of their way to provide you with the finest and safest racing environment possible.  They appreciate knowing that you had a good Ski to Sea race experience.

PLEASE REMEMBER: ANY TEAM MEMBER THAT EXHIBITS UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT OR FAILS TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF ANY RACE VOLUNTEER OR OFFICIAL IS SUBJECT TO DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE RACE.  WE WOULD LIKE TO ASK THAT YOU TREAT ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS WITH THE RESPECT AND APPRECIATION THEIR EFFORTS DESERVE.

Thanks for your cooperation and GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS!
