Leg 6/Mountain Bike Information for 2008

Updates made in 2008.  New and Former Racers: Please Read.

REGISTRATION:
A designated team representative must pick up the team’s race packet prior to the race.  Please refer to procedures at the front of the race guide or on the website SkitoSea.com for pickup times and location. The packet includes the team timing chip, racing bibs & t-shirts. The designated team representative must distribute items to team members. There will be no racing bibs at the exchange areas.

PRE-RACE MEETING:
There will be a pre-race meeting will be held at 12:00 noon on Race Day at Hovander Park at the sandbar on the river. It is important that all mountain bikers ATTEND this meeting.

EQUIPMENT:
Helmets are mandatory. Helmet stickers are being provided this year with your team number on it in order to make it easier to announce your arrival at the Leg Finish.  These stickers do not leave a residue.  Bikes must be marketed and sold as a Mountain Bike and be in good condition. A safety inspection prior to racing is provided by Kulshan Cycles for your convenience. Inspections will be held at Hovander Park starting at 9:30 AM. All Mountain Bikes must have 26" or 29" wheels . No 700c tires allowed. Tire must be labeled 29".

Cyclecross, hybrid and road style bicycles will not be allowed. Drop bars are not allowed, flat or rise bars only. Fairings are prohibited.  A race official will inspect each bike prior to the race to make sure bikes comply with rules.  In addition, there will be a volunteer who will ensure that each bike does indeed fit into the mountain bike category should a question arise.

COURSE:
The mountain biker may help the canoeists carry the canoe from the river to the canoe leg finish line (about 30-40 yards). Hand off will take place under the canoe finish line banner.  Mountain biker: you are responsible for the Canoeists’ finish time. Please be in position when your team mate is approaching. Take the chip from the canoeist, swipe chip to create a canoe finish/ bike start time, ride the approved course and pass the chip to the kayaker at Squalicum Harbor.  The mountain biker may have a helper get his/her bike out when his/her team is coming in to finish the Canoe Leg. The helper may not give the mountain biker a push to get started.

The mountain biker will go through the Park, keeping orange cones to his/her left. When the mountain biker reaches the river dike, they are not to get off until the first bridge at Slater Road is reached. At this point, the mountain biker should dismount, go under the bridge, get back on the river dike, and continue to Country Lane Road Bridge. At Country Lane Road Bridge, the mountain biker should dismount, go under the bridge, and continue up the dirt road to Country Lane Road. From Country Lane Road, the mountain biker needs to turn right onto Hoff Road, continue to the end, and turn left onto Marine Drive.

The mountain biker then needs to continue on the right side of Marine Drive for approximately 3 miles to the next turnoff point (just past Bennett Drive), where he/she will make a left hand turn ACROSS traffic (immediately before the bridge) and proceed onto the trail that takes you below the bridge and onto the main trail.  Go down the main trail to the beach. At the beach, go to the left. The mountain biker needs to keep to the left (above the kelp line) and continue down the beach to the plywood mill.  At this point, the mountain biker will get back on the road and follow the arrows to the finish line.  Vehicle drafting is prohibited. Mountain bikers may not follow closer than 20 feet from any motor vehicle. No outside assistance or spare parts may be provided to the racer after the leg has begun.  This includes assistance from any other racer, follow vehicle or bystander.

The Race Committee’s official monitors will be at set intervals, and violations of these rules or deviation from the course will result in the entire team’s disqualification.  The actual course is nine miles long with the first section (approximately four miles) on gravel or dirt. Racers will be responsible for knowing the course. The course will also be marked on race day. All traffic laws shall be obeyed. There will be no water stations on the course, and the Race Committee reserves the right to alter the published course depending on weather and road conditions. All remaining mountain bikers will be released at 4:30pm.

PRE-RUN on Saturday, May 24 Only:
Some of the course is on private property. Pre-runs will only be allowed on Saturday, May 24th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM. Any other pre-course runs may lead to team disqualification and possible prosecution for trespassing on private property.

INFRACTION OF RULES:
