Leg 4/Bicycle Information

Updates made in 2008.  New and Former Racers: Please Read.

REGISTRATION:
A designated team representative must pick up the team’s race packet prior to the race. Please refer to procedures at the front of the race guide or on the website SkitoSea.com for pickup times and location.  The packet will include the team timing chip, racing bibs & t-shirts.  The designated team representative must distribute items to team members.  There will be no racing bibs at the exchange areas.

PRE-RACE MEETING:
There will be a pre-race meeting at 8:30 AM on Race Day at the Department of Transportation (DOT) snow shed exchange area on the left/north side of the road.  The pre-race meeting will give the latest road reports and answer any questions. It is important that all bikers ATTEND this meeting.

EQUIPMENT:
Helmets are mandatory. Helmet stickers are being provided this year with your team number on it in order to make it easier to announce your arrival at the Leg Finish.  These stickers do not leave a residue.  Bikes must be in good condition. An equipment check is available at the exchange area. Fairings will not be allowed. Bikers may not receive assistance or spare parts from anyone after the biker has started. Recumbent bicycles are not allowed.

NOTE: Rec. Division road bikes may not have aerodynamic aids such as Aero type handlebars, disk or composite wheels or wheel covers.

ROAD CLOSURE:
The road will be closed at 8:30 AM at Canyon Creek Road, Glacier, going east towards the mountain. Any viewers, participants or additional support vehicles who want to go to the top of the mountain must pass Canyon Creek Road prior to 8:30 AM. The road will be closed westbound at 8:30 AM at the Mt. Baker Lodge and will not reopen until 10:00 AM. No vehicles will be allowed to travel down the mountain prior to 10:00 AM. After 10:00 AM, and for the duration of the race, vehicles traveling down Mt. Baker Highway (west) will be dispersed in groups of 5–7 to ensure the safety of the participants. Dispersal is based upon the flow of the race. Team members, spectators and fans should plan accordingly.

RACER/BIKE UNLOADING (New for 2008)
All unloading of bikes and bikers will be at the parking lot ¾ mile past the Department of Transportation (DOT) snow shed exchange area on the left/north side of the road.  There will be a no stopping zone on the Mt. Baker Highway two miles in each direction of the Shuksan DOT station. This will help expedite racers to the ski area.  Teams who stop on the highway to unload bikers or bikes will be disqualified from the race by race officials.

PARKING:
Parking is available 3/4 of a mile on the left, east of the exchange point.  Starting at the run-bike exchange point, no vehicles will be allowed to park on Mt. Baker Highway traveling down-mountain (west) in designated No Parking zones.

WARM-UP AREA (Important)
After the road is closed, a warm-up area will be provided.  It will be between the bike exit driveway of the Shuksan DOT snow shed and the parking lot east where bikes are unloaded.  Once the Washington State Patrol clears the road of all vehicle traffic (at approx 9:00 AM) the warm-up area will open and will remain open until the first runner starts running.  After the first runner is on the course, bikers then must remain in the staging area and will not be allowed east onto the runners course.  Violators and their team will be disqualified from the race.

COURSE:
All bikers must remain in the staging area after the first runner starts on the course. The biker will begin from a standing point as soon as the timing chip is received from the runner. There will be signs (arrows) along the course. The course is approximately 38 miles long, and bikers are responsible for knowing the course. Biker must obey all regular traffic laws, such as stopping at stop signs. No vehicle drafting will be allowed. Bikers may not follow closer than 20 feet behind a motor vehicle. Bikers must not cross the roadway centerline, except in case of an emergency.  This will be monitored very closely. Violators will disqualify their entire team from the race. A warm up course specifically for bikers will be provided (see Warm Up Area above).

At the end of the road bike leg, bikers will pass the chip to the canoeists.  Canoeists are responsible to swipe the chip to create a finish/start time.  Official observers appointed by the Race Committee will monitor this leg of the race.  Violations of the above rules will lead to team disqualifications.

INFRACTION OF RULES:
Infraction of the rules by one team member will disqualify the entire team. Remember,  i-Pods, MP3, Walkman or similar music/audio systems are not allowed to be used by the racers while competing.

RESULTS:
It is important for all racers to show their bib numbers when crossing the exchange areas.  Timing of individual legs may vary based upon exchange area layout. Therefore, personal time kept by racers may not correspond to official results.
